We've got a new look!

The African American Homeschoolers Network (AAHN) is an organization established for families seeking educational resources. Founded by Meka Hunt and Akosua Boateng in 2002, the network has grown consistently.

Members

Member benefits include a membership database allowing members to connect all over the world. We have a directory to help members find other homeschoolers located throughout the United States and Ghana, Africa.  AAHN has discussion boards exclusively for members. There is no need to sift through tons of advertisements because only members are allowed to post.  This is to ensure that only topics relevant to homeschoolers appear in our forums.  We issue a newsletter to keep members informed.  AAHN's academic program includes small group classes and tutoring services.  We also host academic expos  for students to show their talents and compete with other homeschoolers.  We have a training program for new homeschoolers, workshops, and conferences to address the needs of our members and the homeschooling community.

Professional Members

AAHN offers a Professional Membership.  Professional Members earn income with AAHN by planning events, hosting classes, evaluating events and classes.  The instructors for the classes and tutoring program are Professional Members.  We have training programs available to learn more about income earning opportunities and basic responsibilities associated with each job title.  This is flexible, contract work.  As a Professional Member, you can even promote your own business.

Youth Institute of Science and Technology - Ghana, Africa

AAHN is partnered with the Youth Institute of Science and Technology (YIST) located in Accra, Ghana.  This NGO provides education to children in Africa.  It has a training and internship program for teachers.  This program allows students in American colleges to travel to Africa to learn valuable teaching skills and practice their skills in the classroom.  YIST includes GIST, an educational program specifically designed for the education of girls.

Homeschooling Among African Americans

The population of African American home schooled children is estimated to be around 84,000 - 120,000 (2000 Census). Many parents are selecting homeschooling and/or alternative education within the community instead of public schools as the choice for educating their children. Through strong networks with other homeschooling families, and partners within the community, we are able to raise well-rounded, academically and mentally strong children. These children will grow up to positively impact our communities. The public school systems within urban areas are struggling with academic deficiencies and violence. More and more parents are looking for another way. We are taking the destinies of our children into our own hands.
